Sevilla

Hi everyone!

Today Maria and I got up at 4:30 and took a 6:40am flight to Seville, Spain! In less than three hours we went from Italy to Spain! We arrived at the hostel very early, like 11, and took a free walking tour of the city. It is very beautiful, and it is nice to hear Spanish, rather than Italian, because at least I can understand a little more! Seville is in the South of spain and is the " artistic, cultural, and financial capital of southern Spain" There is a huge cathedral, which has an interesting history because it used to be a mosque, and there are some islamic and roman ruins throughout the city. Maria and I walked around.

Also, now that we are in Spain everyone takes Siestas. At around 3 it became really hot and we noticed everyone walking around had Rick Steves guidebooks or maps, meaning they were tourists! It gets REALLY hot here, so in the afternoon everyone just goes inside, closing their shops even! So we went back to the hostel, which by the was is very nice, with free internet and even a rooftop pool! (very small though). At our hostel in our 6 person dorm we met some people, 2 from Italy, 1 from Japan and 1 from London, and we went to watch Spain play in the world cup, which is huge here! They won and there was celebration throughout the city! Maria and I then went to a club and watched flamenco dancers perform!

  1. Hello Kim and Maria,

Welcome to Spain! You were lucky to get to see a World Cup match that made everyone in Seville happy and put them in a good mood. Hot is part of the deal in southern Europe during the summer.

Don't forget to watch the fireworks tonight. Oh, right.

    Keep us posted!

    Love from RWY

  2. Hi Kim and Maria! You gals are having quite the Renaissance trip. Viva la! I heard Seville and Granada are great cities and not too far from Madrid by train. I want to see some pics from these 2 places, it has unique and historic moorish architecture, from when the Moors invaded from Africa. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moors
It's supposed to be quite a stunning place! Good job getting yourselves there. When I got myself to Madrid 3 years ago I was too lame to get to Seville and are you going to granada?

It has been foggy in the mornings here. Today I ran the semana nautica 15K on July 4th, a race I first ran in 1975 in high school. Your Mom and I did open houses today. Amber is fine, hanging out in Isla Vista again. Hmmm. Andy and Kate came back from their 2 week trip to Greece, they had a good time. As you can see, SOS around here, LOL.

How are the hostels? Mostly people just out of college? Are you getting any sleep from the snorers? Are you sampling the local flavors? The museums must be fantastica! :-0

Thanks for the posts because we get to vicariously be with you. and keep 'em coming love KEY

  3. Kimber, this sounds like a FANTASTIC trip. Like your Dad, this trip reminds me of my post-college summer vacation -- oh wait, I worked 4 jobs in Santa Barbara that summer and didn't travel farther than my desk clerk job at the Hotel Upham. But I ate Mexican food, which is close to Spanish food, so it's practically the same as being in Spain (please say it is).

I was looking at your photos...and then looking at Christopher's photos on his blog...and guess what? They're the same photos. You guys have probably bumped into one another without even realizing it. He's been to Pisa, Venice, Florence, Rome, and will soon be in Spain.

You can check out his blog at http://taylorandchristravels.blogspot.com. You can click on the calendar to see where they'll be next. See if you'll be in the same city at the same time?

He's in Athens now, but will be in Madrid on July 5 and Barcelona on July 7. Then Alet-Les-Bains on July 9, which I assume is in France somewhere. Then Paris on July 12, and London on July 15. They finish in Geneva where they will work for the rest of the Summer.

Thanks for the great photos and European news. Keep on Keepin' On (your Dad taught me that in 1972).

  5. Well I was going to say, "Hey Kimber, we're going to be in Madrid at the same time!" but I think my dad took care of that.

We get in tomorrow (Tues July 6) mid-afternoon from Athens and leave Wed night...not a long stint but hopefully we can meet up somewhere???

We're staying at the Pension Enebral on Calle de Velarde, probably going to hit up the Prado tomorrow (free after 6!) if you're around...

  6. Kimber, nice pix of a fabulous adventure. It's great that you're hitting so many places, even Russia! Don't forget to take some down time, though, where you can just relax in a park or something.
