Famous clocktower of Prague! You have to buy a book to know how to use it!
The Dancing House from Prague
Jewish Prague:
Prague has a Jewish section with old synagogues and a cemetery. Though many Jewish places were destroyed by the Nazis, interestingly this one was saved thanks to Hitler, who planned on preserving this as a museum of "the exterminated race". Pretty sick I know. Anyway, there are 5 museums and it was interesting to see, and a really nice break from the 5 million churches I have seen.
Old synagogue.
The Jewish synagogue was built by people who had studied with Moorish architecture. It looked really cool!
Pretty view from Prague
One of our awesome dinners that we make! Delicious, cheap and (usually) healthy! Here we have our typical cucumber, tomato and mozzarella salad with pesto pasta, melon and wine!
We saw this cool Church on our day trip to Karlovy Vary, 2 hours outside of Prague. It was a spa town, and there were hot springs that we drank from. Its supposed to have healing powers, but it tasted gross!
Me rubbing the dog, its supposed to bring you luck!

A note on hostels!
Not all hostels are created equal! In fact, hostels can be amazingly fun, cute and cozy, or impersonal and industrial. While all hostels we have stayed in have been (relatively) comfortable, clean and safe they vary in privacy, the bathroom situation, location and friendliness of people and staff. A lot of times the cost does not correlate with the quality, the Paris hostel was expensive but impersonal and not very nice while the Prague one was very cute and very cheap. We started off finding hostels through HI (hosteling international) but actually those hostels tended to be large, impersonal and expensive. While you are guaranteed a bed, clean sheets and clean bathrooms, the hostels are very large and just cover the basics. Now we use hostelworld (website). Using the reviews we chose cute hostels that fit our needs. In addition to free sheets, we look for hostels with free internet and a kitchen. We have been very lucky and all our hostels have been fine, but it definitely makes a difference of you have a good hostel! The Spain ones were pretty good, a lot of times they organized outings!
you're becoming a hosteling pro! when are we going to travel together? Love Amber
ReplyDeletelondon, rome, venice, florence, cinque terra, pisa, madrid, segovia, granada, barcelona, bordeaux, urrugne, paris, prague; upcoming berlin, st. petersburg and moscow. What did I miss? I had never seen pictures of Prague before. The undulating dancing buildings were spectacular. The Bernstein picture was chilling. Karlovy Vary? You are done with hostels now! Thanks for the Prague update and see you soon love KEY
ReplyDeleteHello Kim and Maria,
ReplyDeleteJoyce and I just returned from our annual week at the beach, where everything was wonderful. We had visits from Cody, Evan, Jesse, Carol and Rodolfo. I did not turn on my car or my computer for a week. Joyce sewed, I did some art work. We signed up for next year.
Upon clicking up your blog this morning I was happy to see the pictures of Prague. Joyce and I were there on a river boat tour a few years ago, but you saw a lot of local sights that were really fine and not on our itinerary. I certainly did not see the dancing house! The pictures that you posted were all excellent, including your homemade dinner and your pose by the bunk bed. It seems that you are becoming an expert on hostelry and living within your budget.
We received your postcard, featuring the many lovely English country doors of different colors and flowers. We hope your "adventure of a lifetime" continues to be exciting and happily memorable. Onward to Russia!
Love from Grandad
We love your updates Kimber... and we LOVED your postcard too!!!
ReplyDeleteIt makes us feel like we are there with you which makes us ALL VERY HAPPY!!
Keep on Keepin' on K?
LOVE.... Your Ventura Young Fam!

"I'm excited to know that you are in Russia! My grandparents from both sides are from there. My dad's dad was from near Minsk and my mom's dad was near Kiev. Let me know if you go there!"

RWY -- Wasn't Minsk where I was yelled at by some old lady for trying to visit a church in my shorts? Hey, no disrespect intended, but it was REALLY HOT that day. Some memories stick with you. Getting yelled at by old Russian women with brooms is apparently one of them.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it was Smolensk. (Names of Russian cities is apparently not one of them.)
Keep up the adventure, Kimber!
